The Power of Music with Paul ILL
“Most people love to listen to soundtracks with the most emotional resonance with them.” — Paul ILL (23:24-23:30)
Did you know that music has the power to influence your emotions? No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music because it can barge into the soul with no boundaries or limitations. In this week's episode, let's talk about the power of music with my guest, Paul ILL.
Part One of ‘The Power of Music with Paul ILL’
Life-long bassist/songwriter PAUL ILL counts playing with the WILLIE DIXON FAMILY BAND at Mr. Dixon's wake, tracking live in a London studio with TINA TURNER, playing and songwriting with CHRISTINA AGUILERA, PINK, ALICIA KEYS and performing with BOB WEIR as career peak experiences.
He is a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, who, as a studio bassist, has played on recordings that have sold over 20 million records. He has sold more than 4.5 million records as a songwriter Paul has active copyrights with Christina Aguilera, Pink, Courtney Love (Hole), Michael Des Barres, and Juliette Lewis.
His recording and touring credits include the afore-mentioned Tina Turner, Bob Weir, Annie Lennox, Linda Perry (whom he counts as a crucial influence and mentor), Courtney Love, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Pink, Daniel Powter, James Blunt, Michael Des Barres, Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones), Bill Ward (Black Sabbath), and Wayne Kramer (MC5) to name a few.
“Look at the great songwriters that we all love of every generation. They can take you someplace in a very short amount of time.” – Paul ILL (21:01-21:09)
Paul is a "first call" studio musician, songwriter, orchestrator and arranger for esteemed record producers such as Jack Douglas, Little Steven Van Zant, Guy Chambers, Michael Lloyd, Bobby Owsinski and the previously mentioned Linda Perry. The iconic Tom Dowd also made use of Paul's bass playing.
"I owe Jack Douglas a lifetime debt of gratitude for his mentorship early in my career and our continued friendship and creative collaborations."
Throughout his career, Paul has created music for film and television.
He co-wrote the theme music for the annual Comedy Central Awards show, including many cues and songs explicitly created for numerous network and independent films and TV shows. The list includes but is not limited to The David Attell Show, The Gong Show, Fast Track to Fame, and The Missy Elliot Reality Show. He has composed scores for numerous independent films, most recently "Any Day," by writer/director Rustam Branaman, featuring Sean Bean.
He, along with Bobby Owsinski, is the co-author of "The Studio Musician's Handbook," published internationally by Hal Leonard Music Publishing.
Currently, Paul is an MFT Trainee who utilizes Narrative therapeutic concepts and non-traditional approaches to offer transformational experiences to a very diverse client population. He teaches songwriting for Jail Guitar Doors at the California Institute for Men.
Part Two of ‘The Power of Music with Paul ILL’
According to Paul, with the advent of digital technology and the way music is created now, it's not the same anymore compared to the golden age of 60s, 70s, and 80s. Nonetheless, it's a matter of what context you're creating as a musician, the energy you portray, and what culture you're producing.
His decades of experience as a successful songwriter and professional recording musician combined with his progressive applications of holistic health practices combine to facilitate positive change for individuals, couples, families, and organizations.
“There's value in getting back to our roots, experiencing, and playing music.” – Dianne A. Allen (28:44-28:49)
Over the years, he has created a compendium of interactive, individual, and group experiences that empower clients to transform through the processes of songwriting and music creation geared for the non-musician from any age group or cultural demographic.
Paul finds narrative songwriting as a therapeutic tool. I can relate to that because I grew up listening to classic songs since my mom was a concert pianist. I fell in love with instrumental music, especially saxophones. Music has a durable, healing nature that serves as a good force in anybody's life. Music brings life and color to the world. It can evoke emotions, especially if the lyrics of the song convey the story of your life. It has become more than just a form of entertainment. It has become a source of therapy for those who are looking for new ways of healing.
If you're having a rough week, think about the soundtrack with the most emotional resonance. Grab your favorite drink, listen to your favorite song, consider its powerful effect on your health, and have fun.

New Help for Anxiety with Laura Mellon
Tuesday Aug 04, 2020
Tuesday Aug 04, 2020
Acupuncture is widely used to treat anxiety in both Asia and Western countries. It works faster than therapy and keeps you drug-free. In this week's episode, we're going to talk about how this helps with specific anxiety symptoms with my special guest, Laura Mellon.
Part One of 'New Help for Anxiety with Laura Mellon'
Laura Mellon grew up in the Dallas Fort Worth area and lived in Austin TX and the D.C. metro area. She's married and has two dogs. She adores food – both the cooking and the eating! Being outside in nature remains her favorite way to spend free time. Laura also likes gardening, hiking, scuba dive, paddleboard, and riding a bike. She believes that health is not just the absence of disease, and prevention is always better than cure.
Her undergraduate degree is a B.S. in Bio with a heavy minor in Chem. After finishing this degree, she worked in a professional laboratory testing for foodborne pathogens. Her interest in the field of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine wouldn't begin until around 2000 when a family member suffered a significant injury that affected several neurological aspects of living a healthy life. What started as a way to help her family became a voracious interest that led Laura to leave her career in the corporate world to go to graduate school.
Her graduate medical degree is an MSAOM, a Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. She's licensed by the TX Medical Board and nationally certified by NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine) as a Diplomat in Oriental Medicine.
"We think it only takes one anti-anxiety pill and everything will be better. But nobody talks about the consequence of whatever that medicine's doing to your body." – Dianne A. Allen (30:57-31:09)
Laura started playing with her first microscope when she was seven years old. At an early age, she felt the need to understand all the little stuff because we tend to lose track of how the tiny ones affect the big ones.
She's been practicing traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture for four years. There is so much information in this field, and there's no way you can assimilate two thousand years of knowledge.
One of the benefits of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine is helping regulate and balance the body so that it can work better, positively impacting anxiety. They make it either go down or go away.
Part Two of 'New Help for Anxiety with Laura Mellon'
People with anxiety are usually overloaded mentally. If you haven't consulted an acupuncturist or traditional Chinese medicine person, you're missing a big part of what you could do to help yourself. There's a lot of qualified acupuncture people who can help support your body and help it function better, whatever your case may be.
"There's a lot of qualified acupuncture people who can help support your body so it can function better." – Dianne A. Allen (39:45-39:55)
It matters to find licensed and qualified human beings so you can get multiple viewpoints, check in with your soul and see what works for you. Because anything you hear on one side of the story, you will listen to the other side of the story. Use your discernment to educate yourself properly so that you can approach your health and wellbeing in a way that serves you.
The world of Chinese medicine is so much vaster than just needles. Find the traditional Chinese medicine practitioner that you vibe with that you trust and listen to because they have some understanding that's different and complementary to other ways of looking at things.

Why Smart People Hurt Part 2 with Dr. Matthew Zakreski
“It's important to know that SOMEONE GETS YOU!” — Dianne A. Allen (01:44-01-46)
Jennifer Lee said, "Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire." You may be one of the most intelligent people on earth, but at the end of the day, you want something that feeds your soul and moves you into an authentic direction. In this week's episode, we're going to continue learning more about smart folks and how they see the world differently.
Part One of ‘Why Smart People Hurt Part 2 with Dr. Matthew Zakreski’
Matthew Zakreski is a graduate of Widener University's Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology in Chester, PA. During his time at Widener, he has specialized in working with children and adolescents in schools, outpatient, and inpatient settings.
He has worked with children in both individual and family therapy modalities, consistent with a systems approach to psychotherapeutic treatment. While at Widener, he also specialized in working with gifted individuals. To that end, he has collaborated with professionals already in the field and has presented about his work with the gifted at multiple conferences.
He is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Evergreen Counseling and Psychological Associates in Conshohocken, PA. He is interested in working with people in multiple therapeutic contexts, both with therapy and assessment.
“Be careful not to get burned-out by overcommitting and overthinking.” – Dianne A. Allen (02:13-02:26)
We ran out of time while discussing the first part of this topic because there's so much to learn about smart folks that we can apply to our daily lives. If you haven't listened to the first part, you may want to do that because you'll learn a little bit more about Matt, the other questions I asked him, and the exciting stories that he shared that will give you a fresh perspective.
So, most of us have experienced the feeling of being burned out because of over committing and overthinking. I asked Matt, "What would you say to the person struggling with that? What are your thoughts and proposed resolutions?" I'm fascinated with his response because, as a visionary leader, it's a big issue that even I realize. He says, "The world is never going to stop asking you for things. There's always another book to write. There's always another client. The best thing to do is decide based on your values and what's important to you. That gives your YES and NO more integrity." I agree with him because it makes people respect you more.
Part Two of ‘Why Smart People Hurt Part 2 with Dr. Matthew Zakreski’
Previously, we talked about the curse of competence where you have this mindset that says, "If I won't do it, no one else will."
Matt says, "The problem with this is you're setting up a situation where no one will do it. If you feel like you're the only competent person to do it, that doesn't mean other people can't do it in the future."
Matt has taken something off his plate during quarantine by teaching his two-year-old child to feed their cats. He's happy that he doesn't need to do it anymore. It's essential to remember that you're not the only person who can do certain things because you can empower other people to do it. There are better and more strategic ways to shift things. Perhaps, someone is doing something that they hate, but you love it, or vice versa.
“Promise yourself that you'll give time to whatever feeds your soul.” – Dianne A. Allen (31:17-31:19)
Here's an interesting scene. He was once in a meeting with a very well-respected school psychologist when he got told, "You know what happens if we only talk about this kid's strength? He'll feel better about himself; he'll do better in school and make more friends!" We all want to be recognized for our exceptionality, right?
If you know someone with lactose intolerance, you don't tell them, "How dare your small intestine not digest lactose properly!" That would be a ridiculous thing to say. It's less toxic to have a supportive and welcoming community that appreciates diversity. Valuing the things we bring to the table and embracing our differences can help us move forward intentionally towards success.
This spontaneous interview with Dr. Matt offers a lot of WISDOM NUGGETS about many more topics: sleeping, creativity, the curse of competence, depression, and diversity! No matter where you are in the world, if this is something that resonates with you, I recommend you check out the whole episode. I PROMISE YOU, it's a must-have podcast episode worth listening.

Why Smart People Hurt Part 1 with Dr.Matthew Zakreski
“Some people have chronic sadness or grief that keeps surfacing once in a while.” — Dianne A. Allen (10:46-10:58)
Life is not just about what we can do. It's about what we are called to do. In this week's episode, I'm delighted to welcome my special guest, Matthew Zakreski. We're going to dig more in-depth about the pains that smart people go through.
Part One of ‘Why Smart People Hurt Part 1 with Dr.
“It always comes back to living your values and what feeds your soul.” – Dianne A. Allen (14:41-14:44)
In this episode, we explore why smart people hurt. Smart people feel the world differently, and they often experience devastating challenges. Matthew often describes himself as a grown-up gifted kid. He believes that many gifted people suffer from what he calls "the curse of competence." Here's one interesting childhood memory that Matthew shared. When he was two years old, he wrote the Word "Australia" on a piece of paper. And, his teacher called his mom excited to see a 2-year writing the word on paper. It's the first inkling that something was different about him.
Growing up, there were times when he felt like he didn't fit into the world's system. He's a natural visionary who's always wanted to play big, but the process is painful because sometimes the world wants you to be one way.
Part Two of ‘Why Smart People Hurt Part 1 with Dr. Matthew Zakreski’
He had many different jobs in the past. He has worked as a lifeguard, a soccer referee, a travel agent, a researcher. He also worked in a bar, a video store for kids who want to rent movies and drawn cartoons before. He's very good at all of them because he's such a smart and gifted person. There was a time he realized, "This doesn't feed my soul."
When he was still working as a travel agent, he made a lot of money until the management offered him a higher position and salary. His belief is if you're not happy with something even if it's going to give you the opportunity to earn a lot of money, don't go for it.
Matthew shares that it's hard to leave jobs nowadays, but in 2020, it is easier now than ever to find a career that fits your calling. He says that if you want to play Dungeons and Dragons, if you're going to do that all day, there are professional Dungeons and Dragons leagues. You could do a podcast. You could do a YouTube channel. There are ways to make a living based on our passions that didn't exist 10 to 30 years ago.
“Building a community helps decrease that feeling of being disconnected.” – Dianne A. Allen (27:59-28:09)
What we can learn from Matthew is that gifted people crave authenticity. They have no patience for meaningless small talk. The idea is finding the things that make their souls happy. At the same time, they know that it takes trusting the process to understand the developmental curve. The things you need when you're 20 are not things you need when you're 30, 40, or beyond. Don't be somebody you're not. That curse can hold us from joining the communities we want to join. Give yourself time and make space for your brain to reflect on your experiences. Then, you'll find that it always moves you in a more authentic direction.

Out Of Thought And Into Action
Tuesday Jul 14, 2020
Tuesday Jul 14, 2020
Out Of Thought And Into Action
“Nobody's meant to live a miserable, resigned and apathetic life.” — Dianne A. Allen (01:15-01:19)
As visionary leaders, sometimes we get stuck in situations where we experience uncertainties and don't know what steps we should take next. Let's face it, living in pain and staying stuck where you are is a tough one. This week's episode aims to help you with five steps that will help you move forward so you can act healthily and responsibly as a good steward.
Part One of ‘Out Of Thought And Into Action’
Have you ever dealt with someone who thinks that they're going to be forever depressed, anxious, and their life is full of difficulties that are way too impossible to overcome? Or if that person is you, know that nobody's meant to live a miserable, resigned and apathetic life.
You don't need to hold on to the pain because there are many ways not to feel heavy. It doesn't mean you disregard how you feel; it's just a matter of focusing more on what actions you can take to have a joyful, happier, and more meaningful life. At the end of the day, that's what we all want, right?
“It matters to be consistent every day.” – Dianne A. Allen (09:25-09:29)
The first step you must take is to be kind and compassionate to yourself. That doesn't mean you make excuses for your unpleasant behaviors. It doesn't mean you blame yourself or anyone else. It's about realizing that you have inherent value beyond what you can even understand and that it's time to be kind to yourself. Put down the inner baseball bat, quit beating yourself up. Stop judging your behaviors and thought patterns that don't work.
The second step is to create psychological safety, one of the most important things that people don't talk much about. You can only evolve to the level that you feel safe, or else you're not going to let all of you show up. Safety has to be there along with kindness and compassion, but that doesn't mean there's no accountability. If internally, you're not being safe in your thoughts, you want to get some help with how to think differently.
The third step is knowing that consistency wins all the time. It's not about trying to beat the clock or be faster than someone else. Consistency over time builds trust, and trust is consistency over time. If you do the same thing every day for a certain amount of time, your success is guaranteed.
Part Two of ‘Out Of Thought And Into Action’
The fourth step is about exploring and understanding what your gifts bring to the world. You need an action plan so you can get more aligned closely with who you are. You may try different things like writing a journal, starting up a blog, calling somebody, asking for help, or saying yes to somebody who's offering something to you. And if something doesn't work out the way you want it, take the time to wait and see until you discern the next best step.
“Come up with an action plan that aligns more closely with who you are.” – Dianne A. Allen (11:22-11:26)
The last thing is knowing that the world is always your perfect feedback loop. It's imperative to pay attention to feedback, look at where your gifts intersect with the needs and wants of the world, and relate to how these things go together because there are many amazing things that only you can do. You might have to be creative a little bit. You might have to start looking around and ask yourself, "How can my unique gifts and talents be of best service?" And until you get aligned with being of the best service and being a good steward, things won't resonate well once you know that you've dialed in.
It's essential to understand how all five of these steps work together and pay attention brings you powerful results. It's time for you to step out of overthinking and live a happy life.

Emotional Intelligence and Agility with Carole Gill
“Strong emotion doesn't mean it needs to come out all ugly and chaotic.” — Dianne A. Allen (09:00-09:04)
When we talk about emotional intelligence, the way our brains work, we feel things before thinking of them. That's how we're hardwired. But in terms of our reaction, is it serving you, or should you react differently? Can a different response lead to a different result? Everything's always expanding in this world, and the more flexible you get, you can deal with any chaos without getting left behind. In this week's episode, we're going to discuss emotional intelligence and agility with Carole Gill.
Part One of ‘Emotional Intelligence and Agility with Carole Gill’
Carole Gill is a Business Consultant, Executive Coach, Leadership Mentor, and Professional Speaker and has spent the past 20+ years helping leaders and their teams develop trust and alignment around purpose, values, roles, and goals, leading to outstanding operational results.
No matter how great your product or service is, your PEOPLE will make or break your business! Her company was founded on that principle in 1996 after leaving a successful 20-year career in corporate America.
She believes that PEOPLE are the most critical component of any company's success. The more effective PEOPLE become, the more efficient work gets done, the more creativity and innovation show up, leading to better bottom-line results.
She is passionate about working with professionals who want to get better at what they do by developing self-awareness, strengthening what works, and changing what doesn't, leading to overall performance improvement and job satisfaction.
“I think we only grow when we're safe emotionally.” – Dianne A. Allen (16:54-16:56)
For someone like Carole Gill, it has always been her passion to understand why people do what they do. It's something that she does with such desire and love. It was the journey of figuring out why she was making choices based on the emotions that she had and how she was relating to it. And then, it led itself into a whole new world for her. But ultimately, when you think about emotional intelligence, it's an oxymoron.
Because of her inquisitiveness, she asks a lot of questions to figure out what's driving their action, not necessarily what they're doing, but the reason behind it. For example, if someone is in a very happy place, you want to understand what's driving that happiness. But if they're in an off place, they're not happy, or they're frustrated, you want to understand what's driving that and help them recognize that they can choose to respond to that emotion differently. That gives them more effectiveness.
Part Two of ‘Emotional Intelligence and Agility with Carole Gill’
Emotional intelligence is about understanding how you react to your emotions or respond to them naturally. So, there's a set of skills or competencies that you can develop in the process. Self-awareness component helps you respond differently so you can get a different result.
For example, if you're defensive, the conversation breaks down. On the other hand, if you choose not to get defensive and ask proper questions, it helps give you a stronger level of understanding. And that's the key to why we want emotional intelligence in our world.
“The more adaptable we become, the more agile we become.” – Dianne A. Allen (14:57-15:02)
When breakdowns occur in communication due to personality conflict, it's actually what they're doing with their personality that gets them in trouble. Who they are is fine, but their choices as a result of the emotions that are driving them are the things that get them in trouble. You can choose not to act from that emotion and bypass that piece of your brain, saying, "What's the best thing I could do in this situation right now to get me the best result?" And that's what emotional intelligence is all about. It's retraining your brain.
Everything in our world right now is pretty chaotic. So, being able to adapt more will help us get through that transition curve a lot more quickly because change happens no matter what. The more you use adaptability, and you learn to flex, the more you can navigate through the chaos that's out there without it negatively impacting you.

Pushing Through Doubt with Dianne A. Allen
“Sometimes we don't give ourselves permission to feel doubt.” — Dianne A. Allen (00:27-00:31)
Have you ever experienced the feeling of doubt up to the point it served as a barrier for you to reach your destiny? Many gifted and visionary leaders don't realize how they're allowing doubt to steal their joy. Perhaps, you think it's part of the human condition. But sometimes, we don't give ourselves permission to feel doubt, just because our society taught us that we shouldn't feel it. Instead of asking what's wrong with you, contemplate what you can do better so you can have a successful journey. In this week's episode, we're going to talk about pushing through doubt. It's time for you to perceive your uncertainty from obstacles to stepping stones.
Part One of ‘Pushing Through Doubt with Dianne A. Allen’
Our daily lives are constantly filled with routines that take our energy, time, and attention. Expectedly, it can sometimes be challenging. Especially during the pandemic that we're going through right now, doubt can easily creep in, and this is what happens for sure.
It distracts you from your true identity and where you're headed. It's a small voice that'll tell you that you're not good enough or you're dreaming about something that's too big to be accomplished. It's not the truth you should be leaning on to, because it's a BIG LIAR!
“Doubt is a distraction from who you are and where you're headed.” – Dianne A. Allen (02:15-02:21)
Once we realize we have to feel kindness and compassion for ourselves, once we take a breath and give ourselves a break, we realize that it's time to trust. If you're trying to get on the other side of having doubt consume you is to begin to trust the greater plan of the universe and trust yourself as a competent human being. You have a mighty purpose, and you're not here on this planet by accident. Have a little bit of faith that you're able to achieve great things, and things will always be better.
Part Two of ‘Pushing Through Doubt with Dianne A. Allen’
As we all go on our journey, we tend to get attached to the outcome that we miss the beauty of the process. Be an observer, and take the time to witness everything that's happening around you, but not necessarily getting involved in everything or on top of everything. It's about appreciating the small things so you won't miss the bigger picture.
“Gratitude can help you overcome all your doubts.” – Dianne A. Allen (12:42-12:51)
Keep on moving forward and keep expanding because that's the way it works. Focus on stepping out of the drama for a minute, step out of the intensity, and honor yourself for all of the good things that you're doing in the world.
You're flawlessly beautiful, lovable, and capable. Let's release the belief and idea that there's something wrong with you. Enjoy the freedom from letting doubt distract you away from your aligned goodness. Focus on what's right with you, and don't leave any room for the doubt to stay. It's always possible for you to live your real vision. Go out there and let your light shine.

How Perseverance Helps You Overcome Obstacles in Life with Andy Blair
“You can turn those obstacles into stepping stones by having perseverance.” — Dianne A. Allen (00:46-00:50)
Have you ever met someone who was able to turn their obstacles into stepping stones? All of us want to have a certain level of perseverance. This may be a common word that you hear every day, but it can create such a powerful impact on our life. In this week's episode, we're going to talk about how perseverance helps you overcome obstacles in your life.
Part One of ‘How Perseverance Helps You Overcome Obstacles in Life with Andy Blair’
Andy Blair is currently a Family Life and Recovery Pastor at HighPoint Church in Lake Wales, Florida. Andy is originally from Kentucky, but he and his family have spent time all over the country. Before coming to Lake Wales, he has been the lead pastor of Crosspoint Church in Natchez, Mississippi, for three years.
Before that, he and his family lived in the Tampa Bay area for eight years. Andy spent 20+ years in Fortune 500 companies and had a successful career in sales and leadership. However, in 2006 he found himself bankrupt spiritually, mentally, and physically and found himself in a drug and alcohol rehab.
“Keep going no matter what.” – Dianne A. Allen (01:17-01:19)
Andy finally answered God's call on his life in 2006, and since then, God has been working in and through Andy and his family. Andy's wife, Becky, is a school teacher and is teaching Kindergarten in Polk County. He loves to golf, fish and hunt.
Andy and Becky have two daughters, Emily and Betsy. Emily is a graduate of Furman University and is currently in Cincinnati, Ohio, and works for the American Heart Association. Betsy graduated from Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City and is in her second year at Palm Beach Atlantic, where she is pursuing a master's in social work. Both daughters are getting married in 2020.
Part Two of ‘How Perseverance Helps You Overcome Obstacles in Life with Andy Blair’
Andy loves to share the story of how God put his family back together through a church. Growing up, he discovered that he has a high calling and that life isn't just about money or fame. That served as the defining moment that shifted his life until he decided to follow his vision and heart's desire. He surrendered in a way that he started looking at what he was supposed to be doing with his life.
He remembers getting on a plane in Houston to fly to Florida to go to rehab, and he said to God, "If you relieve this from me, I will serve you the rest of my life." Upon staying in Florida, he started attending a church and bumped into a Pastor who told him that he has what it takes to be in the ministry.
“Follow your heart's desire, your vision, and your calling.” – Dianne A. Allen (11:44-11:46)
That was the beginning of God right-sizing his life through many places where he was led to meet different people speaking into his life and through various service opportunities until he finally said yes to God.
Despite the trials along the way, God has been so good providing for his family. He painted houses while pursuing ordination and establishing his qualifications for ministry.
Today, he continues to make a positive impact in the lives of many people out there. Maybe not all our stories are the same, but all things always work together for our good.
His story of perseverance can fuel someone's faith that you may not be where you want to be right now, but you are where you need to be because God is in the business of putting people in the right direction so they can live their God-given purpose.
